📏 The five dinosaurs — size cheat sheet
Each dinosaur is compared to a familiar object so kids can really picture their size.
- Compsognathus (1m) — about the length of a chicken, but its long tail made it 1m total. One of the smallest dinos!
- Velociraptor (2m) — about as long as a German Shepherd dog, but much leaner and built for speed
- Triceratops (9m) — twice the length of a family car, with a huge frill and three sharp horns
- T-Rex (13m) — the same length as a school bus! Its hip reaches the bus roofline
- Argentinosaurus (35m) — longer than three buses end to end, taller than a two-storey house — one of the biggest land animals ever
T-Rex Tooth & Dino Steps
T-Rex teeth could be up to 30cm long — that's bigger than a ruler! Let's bring that down to size.
Steps
- Cut a piece of string or paper 30cm long — that's a T-Rex tooth!
- Hold it next to your hand. How does it compare to your fingers?
- Now cut a 1m string for Compsognathus. Walk it along the floor to feel how small the tiniest dino was.
- Compare: how many Compsognathus fit inside one T-Rex? (Answer: 13!)
Pace Out an Argentinosaurus
Argentinosaurus was 35m long — almost the width of a basketball court (28m). Let's see how far that really is!
Steps
- Head to the backyard, park, or tennis court — anywhere with open space.
- Take big, normal steps and count them as you walk. Most kids' paces are about 50cm (half a metre).
- Guess first: How many steps to reach 35m?
- Walk and count, marking your start and end points with a stick or chalk.
- Measure your actual pace length with a tape measure, then calculate: your step length × number of steps = ?

🔍 What's happening? (Simple explanation)
Our brains are great at comparing things we can see — like "bigger than a car" or "as long as a bus" — but terrible at imagining abstract measurements. That's why relative scale is such a powerful learning tool.
